History of the Looff Hippodorme

Hippodrome was built by Charles I.D. Looff and his son Arthur to house one of their carousels. It was built on top of a short wide pier (nbow known as the Newcomb Pier) that is adjacent to the much longer Santa Monica Pier. The Hippodrome was one of the attractions in Looff's Pleasure Pier amusement park, and the carousel was opened to the public on June 12, 1916.

The hippodrome was sold to Walter Newcomb who re3placed the old carousel with Philadelphia Toboggan Company Carousel #62, which was moved from the (either Ocean Park Pier or Venice Pier).

The city of Santa Monica reversed their order to demolish the Newcomb Pier and its hippodrome

The city of Santa Monica acquired ownership of the Newcomb Pier.

The hippodrome was designated an official City of Santa Monica Landmark on August 17, 1976.

The city of Santa Monica formed the Pier Restoration and Development Task Force, an entity later known as the Pier Restoration Corporation to completely restore the Santa Monica Pier, the Newcomb Pier, and the Looff Hippodrome.

Hippodrome was designated a national historic landmark by the United States National Parks Service3.

The Pacific Park amusement park opened on the Newcomb Pier and the Santa Monica Pier.
